Additional information

The paper describes a new experimental method for determining discharge coefficients extremely rapidly over a range of pressure ratios. The method is particularly relevant for the rapid experimental optimisation of the ports on a four-stroke cycle engine cylinder head. CFD was used to develop a simple method of analysis and identify areas for future enhancement for the experimental apparatus. The existing apparatus and method was validated against traditional steady flow experimental methods and shown to be accurate within 4%. Optimum Power Technology funded this research for commercial exploitation: Glen Chatfield, Optimum Power.
