Dr Susana BANERJEE is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead in the Gynaecology Unit of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM). The RM, together with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Dr Banerjee undertook a PhD with the ICR, supported by an Avon Breast Cancer Crusade Clinical Fellowship for laboratory research, awarded in December 2009. She then completed her specialist training at the RM. In her role as RM Unit Research Lead she is responsible for developing the unit’s strategy in relation to clinical trials and the development of new drugs in gynaecological cancers. She is actively involved in trials and translational research working with colleagues in the ICR as part of the BRC, as evidenced by her publications. Dr Banerjee is currently a member of the supervisory teams for 2 ICR research students.

Dr James BEDFORD is a Principal Clinical Radiotherapy Physicist in the Joint Department of Physics of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The Joint Department of Physics has a remit to conduct research into physics as applied to medicine and then act as the translator of this research into clinical practice. As part of the Radiotherapy Physics Group, Dr Bedford’s research role involves research into new radiotherapy techniques, equipment, accessories and software and providing essential support for clinical trials across the two institutions. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Dr Bedford’s research falls within the BRC Radiotherapy theme. Dr Bedford is currently a member of the supervisory team for an ICR research student.

Dr Gina BROWN is a Consultant Radiologist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Reader in Gastrointestinal Cancer Imaging within the Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Dr Brown was the Cancer Imaging theme lead within the BRC for most of the REF 2014 period and her research falls within the BRC Cancer Imaging theme, evidenced by her publications. Dr Ian CHAU is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead in the Gastrointestinal (GI)/Lymphoma Unit of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Honorary Faculty within the Division of Clinical Studies of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Dr Chau’s research is focused within the BRC, as evidenced by his publications. As RM Unit Research Lead he facilitates collaborations between the RM and the ICR within the BRC. His main personal research focus is on clinical trials and translational research in gastrointestinal cancers and lymphoma. He is the Chief / Principal Investigator for multiple phase I, II and III clinical trials evaluating novel treatment strategies and agents in various cancer signalling pathways sponsored and hosted by the RM/ICR. Dr Chau has been a member of the supervisory teams for 6 ICR research students during the REF period.

Dr Julia CHISHOLM is a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM), Head of the Children and Young People`s (CYP) Unit and a member of the Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology Targeted Drug Development team of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and the RM. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Dr Chisholm’s research falls within the BRC. Dr Chisholm is active in developing the research strategy in paediatric sarcoma across the RM and ICR and in conjunction with the BRC and is the Principal Investigator of phase I, II and III studies. She is involved in the design of the next set of European trials in newly diagnosed and recurrent rhabdomyosarcoma through membership of the European paediatric soft tissue sarcoma group, the Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer network and links with colleagues in the ICR.

Professor David CUNNINGHAM is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Head of the Gastrointestinal (GI)/Lymphoma Unit with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Professor of Cancer Medicine within the Division of Clinical Studies of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). He is Director of Clinical Research for the RM and the ICR and Director of the RM/ICR specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Cunningham's institutional role is to develop the research priorities and strategy for clinical/translational research for the RM/ICR; to develop and deliver high quality clinical research for the RM/ICR; and to shape and deliver the agenda for the BRC. Within the RM GI unit, he works in conjunction with the GI/Lymphoma Unit Research Lead, to develop and deliver the research strategy for the GI unit in line with the overall research strategy of the Institution and in conjunction with the BRC. Professor Cunningham’s main research interests are clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancer and lymphoma, along with the development of translational research and novel molecular therapies. His research falls within the BRC as evidenced by his publications. Professor Cunningham has supervised 6 ICR research students during the REF period.

Professor Mitch DOWSETT is a Consultant Clinical Scientist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM), Professor of Biochemical Endocrinology within the Divisions of Breast Cancer Studies and Molecular Pathology of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), and Head of the RM/ICR Centre for Molecular Pathology. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Dowsett is the Molecular Pathology theme lead within the BRC. He is also the Head of the Endocrinology Team for the ICR Breakthrough Breast Cancer Centre. In all these roles, Professor Dowsett leads on translational research for breast cancer focusing on hormonal and biomarker aspects. Professor Cyril FISHER is a Consultant Histopathologist and Head of the Histopathology Unit with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Professor of Tumour Pathology within the Division of Molecular Pathology of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Professor Fisher’s research falls within the BRC Molecular Pathology theme. As Head of the RM Unit he is responsible for developing and managing the research strategy for the unit in line with the overall research strategy of the RM and in conjunction with the NIHR RM/ICR BRC. His own research is focused in the field of soft tissue sarcomas, for which he is a world-renowned expert. This includes development and assessment of new diagnostics methods including applied molecular techniques; developments and assessment of pathological prognostic factors; investigation of lineage and inter-relationships between established and novel soft tissue tumour types; and collaborative clinicopathological and scientific studies with RM and ICR colleagues.

Professor Martin GORE is Medical Director for The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Consultant Medical Oncologist within the RM Gynaecology, Skin and Urology Units, and Professor of Cancer Medicine with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Professor Gore’s research falls within the BRC Molecular Pathology theme. In his institutional role, Professor Gore is responsible to the RM Board for the appointment and conduct of research-active consultants, whether substantive or honorary and answerable to the Board for the delivery of the research agenda. At the individual level, he contributes to the research strategy through teaching and supervision of students and trainees, conduct of clinical trials and collaboration in translational programmes. His main research interests are the development of novel therapeutics in ovarian cancer, melanoma and renal cell carcinoma, particularly in the area of biologics, gene therapy and targeted agents. Professor Stephen JOHNSTON is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead in the Breast Unit of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Professor of Breast Cancer Medicine within the Division of Breast Cancer Research of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Johnston was the first Director of the BRC from 2007 to 2012. As Research Lead in the RM Breast Unit he works closely with the Unit Head, the BRC Breast Cancer theme lead and colleagues in the ICR Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit and in Academic Biochemistry. His personal research focuses on understanding mechanisms of endocrine resistance in breast cancer. He is actively involved in facilitating the interface between basic and applied research, and is Chief Investigator for a number of national and international phase II / III breast cancer targeted therapeutic studies in endocrine resistance. Professor Johnston has supervised/been a member of the supervisory teams for 4 ICR research students during the REF period.

Dr Dow-Mu KOH is a Consultant Radiologist in Functional Imaging with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Reader in Functional Imaging in Cancer within the Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Dr Koh became the BRC theme lead for Cancer Imaging in January 2013 and his research falls within the BRC as evidenced by his publications. His current research interest is in the development and application of functional imaging techniques for tumour assessment and he works closely with colleagues in the Cancer Research UK and EPSRC Cancer Imaging Centre at the ICR and the RM. Dr Koh has been a member of the supervisory teams for 6 ICR research students during the REF period.
