Additional information

<12>The paper is based on the conference version published at ICALP 2009. This work initiated the study of the impact of collision detection capability in multi-hop wireless networks. Inspired by this work, several follow-up papers by Ghaffari, Lynch and Sastri [Distributed Computing'2012], Ghaffari and Haeupler [SODA'2013], Schneider and Wattenhofer [DISC'2010] and Vaya [IPL'2013] have studied the impact of collision detection and similar capabilities on leader election and related problems, such as broadcasting, MIS, synchronisation and gossiping.
