Additional information

Two sketchbooks shortlisted for the only national prize for sketchbook drawing in the UK, peer reviewed exhibition juried by Deanna Petherbridge, Meryl Ainslie and Sandy Sykes. The exhibition is documented in a full-colour illustrated catalogue and my work was used on the exhibition website.

The Rabley Drawing Centre is engaged in disseminating and promoting contemporary drawing through projects such as the biannual Sketch Drawing Prize. It also hosts residencies and represents internationally renowned artists: (e.g. Gillian Ayres, Humphrey Ocean, Emma Stibbon).

The sketchbooks selected for exhibition are two of 20 in the past 3 years which explore the nature of the sketchbook and the possibilities it offers as a research tool. This inquiry arises from collaborative research with scientists at the Centre for Clinical Anatomy, Lancaster University, exploring shared working procedures in certain sciences and art. This has resulted in new approaches to understanding the creative sketchbook by situating it in the context of the scientific experiment (e.g. Rhineberger). It builds on the Visual Intelligences project at the LICA, exploring how the creative decision making process may be documented and communicated.

This has recently led to a research project at Lancaster Walking the Line led by myself and Gerry Davies which explores possibilities in interdisciplinary drawing. Participants include Sarah Simblet, Sian Bowen, Ilana Halperin, Leo Duff. http://drawing-walkingtheline.blogspot.co.uk/

The work has been presented at other national and international forums: Exhibitions (The Moment of Privacy has Passed, Usher Gallery, Lincoln 11/12/10–06/03/11) http://web.me.com/barbara.griffin/sketchlincoln/exhibition_photos/Pages/exhibition_opening_night.html#0; and international conference papers: Recto Verso, Redefining the Sketchbook (The Collection, Lincoln, UK 10-11 Feb 2011) an international forum to explore innovative approaches to using or contextualising the sketchbook in contemporary practice; The European Association for Science Studies annual conference (Trento University, Italy 2-4th Sept 2010); the Experimental Society International conference at Lancaster (exhibition and presentation). http://www.lancs.ac.uk/experimentality/event/international-conference-experimental-society
