Additional information

Paper addresses long-standing problem of what happens when stratified fluid (e.g. the atmosphere or ocean) interacts with isolated obstacle (e.g. mountain or sea mount). Work demonstrates that simple linear theory is capable of providing excellent quantitative agreement with laboratory measurements if correct account is taken of hitherto-unnoticed slope that develops across two regions of flow around obstacle. Work is result of international collaboration with University of Cambridge and Ecole Polytechnique Paris.
