Additional information

Determining Probability of Detection (PoD) is integral part of certification process for new NDT techniques. Historically obtaining PoD data has been expensive process requiring extensive trials on components containing artificial defects. Model-assisted PoD studies significantly reduce effort involved. Paper demonstrates principle of model-assisted PoD applied to ultrasonic detection of cracks emanating from cold-worked holes in aircraft structures. Work led to implementation of technique on a UK military aircraft [Head of Structural Airworthiness, Qinetiq Ltd.], enabling it to continue flying beyond its design life. Paper won John Grimwade Medal for best paper in journal in 2008.
