Additional information

Although cargo ships haul estimated 90% of world trade, comprehensive analysis of cargo shipping is hampered by lack of a worldwide database. Paper presents first large-scale analysis of real ship movements extracted from records of ships' automatic identification systems. Work was chosen as journal cover story and received substantial media coverage (e.g. AFP [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-37], New Scientist [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-38], Der Spiegel [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-39]). Paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5 and is in top 3% of most-cited in journal during REF period (Web of Science, 23/3/2013).
