Additional information

Inspection of anisotropic single-crystal turbine-blade roots in aero-engines is challenging without extremely-costly strip down. Paper was one outcome of EngD project with Rolls-Royce plc. to develop improved ultrasonic technique that could simultaneously measure and compensate for uncertainty in crystallographic orientation angle during inspection. At Rolls-Royce, first-author Lane won John Bush award for work [contact: Company Associate Fellow NDE] and Lane's thesis won 2012 Faculty Research Prize [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-4]. Rolls-Royce site trials indicated that order-of-magnitude increase in fraction of defects detected was achieved.
