Paper showed that traditional ceramic filters of similar type to those used in eighteenth century in UK provide effective treatment for faecally-contaminated drinking water. Work is an outcome of European project "Aquapol" (No. ICA4-CT-2000-30039, €446,000, 2002-7) and was part of body of work supporting subsequent Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation "Aquatest" grant (No. 48599, $13.1M, 2007-12) that is developing low-cost, water quality testing devices for developing world [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-126].
