This 100,000-word monograph represents four years’ research. It required detailed study of the eight manuscripts that transmit the primary corpus in order to analyse material features such as illustration and placement of text. This entailed travelling to the libraries in France, Belgium and Scotland where the relevant manuscripts are held, and the creation of a database cataloguing paratextual features such as the placement of decorated initials and the wording of rubrics.
