Additional information

This chapter is the outcome of a five-month Senior Teaching Fellowship residency at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture at Justus-Liebig University in Giessen (Oct 2008 – Jan 2009). The research addresses the issue of metaphor as a material cultural manifestation through a discussion of early cinema technologies in the context of a network of competing cultural, scientific and cognitive aspirations. It contributes to the anthropology of cinema concerned with human engagement with audio-visual media as a historically dynamic contingency.

This research addresses not only academics of cognate fields including areas of literature studies, cultural studies, film-, cinema- and media studies, and media philosophy, but also a wide community of post-graduate researchers interested in interdisciplinary research, and a broad informed readership.
