The paper introduces the concept of “water footprint” and its main components for the design, engineering and manufacturing industries. The findings contribute to the development of water management strategies for these industries. Following the publication of the paper, and due to China's growing importance in global manufacturing, the authors were invited to deliver a keynote at the ‘First World Famous Mountains Research Conference’ in Jiujiang (China) in May 2013. The development of that research showed the analyses of the competitive dynamics of water utility companies in China, and their potential effect on the global markets in 2023.
