Experimental study and analytical model of the cavitation ring region with small diameter ultrasonic horn
This research was initiated from a funded PhD project (£70K, contact C. Vielliard, SKF Engineering and Research Centre, The Netherlands) in 2008. Controlling cavitation surface failure bench tests aids the interpretation of components damaged during industrial service of ceramic hybrid bearings. Using non-standard test procedure by the use of small probes applied to ceramic cavitation studies was developed with in-kind collaboration with Sonic Systems Ltd (Somerset TA19 9JA). The explanation of cavitation clusters in terms of an energy approach also underpins related cavitation studies of steel within refrigerant environments which was initially sponsored by Energetix (£16k).
