The monograph required the collection and analysis of a considerable body of material and primary sources which were especially difficult to access, and its argument required a lengthy period of data collection. As the first monograph to identify and explore this topic, it required seven years of study of material in special collections and archives, including letters, diaries and rare out of print materials. Three grants funded the research, and the breadth and originality of the project was recognised in its winning the Allan Lloyd Smith Memorial Prize and being shortlisted for an ESSE Award.
