English abstract

The idiosyncratic characteristics which separate Spanish thought and culture from those of the rest of Europe constitute one of the key issues discussed in María Zambrano's Pensamiento y poesía en la vida española. This article argues that Zambrano's sense of Spanish exceptionalism is based on is religion. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to clarify the meaning of the concept of religion is in Zambrano's thought, paying attention particular to the relationship between religion and spirituality. Then, it will explore the attitudes towards religion during the Spanish Second Republic so as to re-evaluate Zambrano's position regarding Spanish exceptionalism.
