Additional information

This paper summarises the results of a systematic investigation (sponsored by ONR) to evaluate the origin of the ‘superproperties’ reported by the inventors of a new beta-titanium alloy. By combining Transmission electron microscopy with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, a new theory for deformation in these alloys was developed and the observations of the original inventors explained. This deformation mechanism has allowed further alloy development to take place both by the authors (sponsored by MOD) and other laboratories who routinely cite this work.
