Additional information

Generation of electrical power using turbine generator sets is still commonplace, their bearings can contribute about 2MW to overall losses. This research was aimed at investigating the effect of manufacturing tolerances on a journal bearing’s performance. Use of 2k experiment design is a novel approach in this discipline and this paper described both the theoretical approach and the development of new dimensionless groups. This joint research with the Technical University of Guangxi demonstrated that many of the discrepancies previously stated could be attributed to manufacturing tolerances; future work is aimed at investigating whether allowance for tolerances can improve energy loss.
