Double-weighted statement

The volume is the outcome of ten years of research on ancient Greek epistolography, with particular intense work during the period 2008–2013. It involved the analysis of diverse and technically challenging primary sources – from the early letters on lead, to those embedded in the works of ancient historiographers, to letters inscribed on stone by Greek city-states – across a wide chronological range. This extensive research formed the backdrop for a critical re-evaluation of Greek epistolary writing from the archaic to the Hellenistic Age, as a coherent history. The volume also includes two dossiers of primary sources.
