Additional information

Small nocturnal mammals use whiskers in support of locomotion, navigation and prey-catching. Similar so-called vibrissal sensing is of interest to engineers as artificial vibrissae could provide proximal sensors that can determine distance to nearby objects alongside surface characteristics such as shape and texture). Paper explores mechanism for tactile sensing using active whisker array based on rat macro-vibrissae. Core principles have been employed in further work including EPSRC project (EP/I032533/1, £1.1M, 2012-5) which draws inspiration from neuroscience research on adaptive control mechanisms involving cerebellum.
