Additional information

Blind fish develop flow field around them that changes as they approach obstacle; this change is sensed by their lateral line. Paper provides first-ever quantification of effect by combining particle-image-velocimetry measurements of flow-field and computational-fluid-dynamics modelling. Novelty is to consider flow around and in front of fish, rather than its wake, hence enabling direct evaluation of sensory information. Result has inspired further work at Harvard [Prof. Lauder] where bio-inspired autonomous underwater vehicles are being developed.
