Cosmopolitans and Heretics: New Muslim Intellectuals and the Study of Islam
This book (324pp) meets three of five criteria, in that it uses data collected and translated by the researcher from primary and secondary sources in six languages (Arabic, Indonesian, English, French, German, Dutch) on three highly prolific Muslim intellectuals. This material is used for a detailed and close reading of the scholarly output of these three, who have so far received little attention in the Anglophone academe. The analysis and interpretation builds on critical engagement with an extensive theoretical apparatus, including continental European and Islamic scholarship, resulting in an approach and argument which received peer-recognition as innovative and agenda-setting.
