Additional information

This paper describes a novel method of fixture design for free form complex component machining. Most previous research had focused on the 3-2-1 fixture for regular shape components, where a point-to-point contact model may be sufficient. However, for components with complex geometry, the point-to-point method is no longer satisfactory. This paper presents a novel method of FEA on a system consisting of a fixture and turbine blades by introducing surface-to-surface contact elements for the complex contact geometry and the compliant contact status. The method has set a new standard for fixture design in Rolls-Royce.
