English abstract

This article considers the early, somewhat troubled, history of the publication of the Welsh Bible in London before examining the significance of the Peter Williams edition, published in 1770, the first edition of the Bible to be published in Wales, an important milestone in the development of the eighteenth-century print industry in the country. Despite initial controversy over the theology of some of the explanatory notes, Williams’s edition became a publishing phenomenon, with three editions appearing before 1800 and a further thirty-five before 1900.
