Additional information
The paper reports the development of the first tri-layer electrospun scaffold that mimics the mechanical properties of cartilage in compression and tension and is able to incorporate living chondrocyte cells. This novel scaffold design was part of a patent filing (WO2012/080706 A2).This paper motivated follow-on work at Imperial College (DoI:10.1089/ten.tea.2012.0580 and DoI:10.1089/ten.tec.2013.0225) and is featured in two recent reviews (DoI:10.1089/ten.TEB.2012.0723.) and (Eur Cell Mater. 2013 May 2; 25:248-67). The work was funded by Wellcome Trust and EPSRC Osteoarthritis Centre of Excellence (£10.9M).
