‘Anemone’ is a large tactile organic spherical form created by utilising the traditional craft of shibori with a non-traditional material; a recycled industrial polyester mesh and became part of the BlindArt Permanent Collection in 2008.
BlindArt is an innovative, all-inclusive charity founded in 2004, BlindArt gained worldwide recognition for promoting contemporary works of art by both visually impaired and sighted artists, showcasing them side-by-side and challenging the public to tell the difference. The Blind Art Permanent Collection of interactive art breaks through traditional hierarchies, and barriers by inviting visitors to experience them through touch as well as sight, smell and sound. The experience challenges the notion that sight is essential for creating and enjoying exceptional art.
On 11th October 2012, World Sight Day, the BlindArt Collection was permanently housed at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London in collaboration with “The Moorfields Arts Project”. Moorefield is the oldest and largest of the world’s leading eye hospitals dealing, providing expertise in clinical care, research and teaching and education. By housing the BlindArt permanent collection, within the public areas of Moorfield Eye Hospital with around 500,000 international patient attendances each year, the Moorfields Arts Project are sure the tactile collection will get maximum exposure and create an innovative way to engage and improve patient, visitor and staff experiences.
Prior to its relocation the BlindArt Permanent Collection had been permanently housed at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC). At which time BlindArt used the collection to promote this notion to museums, galleries and art schools through the touring exhibition “Touching Art Touching You’. In 2008 the BlindArt’s website received an average of 105,000 hits per month. The majority of visitors were from Europe and North America, followed by Asia, and a handful of visitors each month from Oceania, Africa and South America.
