Additional information

This paper describes work for the 1st 1000 kV ultra high voltage (UHV) transmission line in the world. The line provides a strong link between the Northern and Central grids of China: 645 km, 1000 kV, 5 GW. The long distance and large charging current presented significant challenges to devise a scheme with fault distance estimation error of less than 5%. It demonstrates that the developed protection scheme has been successfully used in practice (contact: Beijing Sifang Automation Co Ltd, Dr Zhenyu Xu, xuzhenyu@sf-auto.com).
