The work reported in this paper stemmed from research performed on the BBSRC funded grant proposal E19292 “The biology of drug targeting: Predictive mathematical modelling of drug impact in complex and dynamic cell populations”. It was an invited submission for a special edition of the journal following presentation at the 7th IFAC BMS Symposium, Aalborg, Denmark, August, 2009. The collaboration has also led to EU FP7 Marie Curie ITN EID funding for the project IMPACT (PITN-GA-2012-316736, £1.18M) in collaboration with AstraZeneca Sweden (Peter.Gennemark@astrazeneca.com) and NC3Rs /EPSRC (No. K001205/1, £307k) with AstraZeneca UK (contact james.yates@astrazeneca.com).
