Section I (Ancient Greek) has been rewritten/expanded to provide a complete account of the pre-history and early history of the ancient dialects together with sample texts and commentaries. Section II (Medieval Greek) has been revised to include a fuller treatment of Byzantine belles lettres (with additional texts), together with alternative accounts of the emergence of a 'Greek' consciousness towards the end of the era and of many other specific issues (passim). Section III (Modern Greek) has been expanded to include an updated historical prelude and some analyses of different styles of contemporary writing.
