Portfolio of Distributed Performance Works

This portfolio consists of four compositions conceived for distributed performance. The works employ both static and dynamic (animated) graphic notation to convey relationships between performers, network nodes and musical form. The three pieces explore different ways of communicating musical gesture and relationships to performers through static graphic scoring in "Trio", synchronised distributed notation in "Cipher Series" and live animated three dimensional notation in "Netrooms" and "Netgraph"

Although not limited to geographically distributed performance, all works contribute to a growing repertoire of pieces conceived for multiple locations and address strategies for performer-to-performer communication in both local and distributed scenarios.

Graphic notation is employed as a way of framing musical form while relying on collaboration with performers for the interpretation of the scores and establishment of relationships between sound and visuals. Scores are displayed to both audience and musicians to highlight the structure of each piece as well as relationships between graphic and musical gesture.

The software system for Netrooms and Netgraph (Playspace) in collaboration with Rob King (research assistant, 2010) was custom developed to allow for the creation of 3D objects to be manipulated in realtime. The scores can be rendered simultaneously in multiple locations to reflect multiple points of view and access to animated musical gesture. While Cipher Series, Trio and Netgraph are conceived for instrumentalists, Netrooms is a participatory piece which invites any individual to collaborate in an network which is based on live audio crowd sourcing and controlled feedback.

All works have been performed multiple times with different ensembles in events including as Ars Electronic Centre 2010, Music in the Global Village 2010 (Budapest) Sonorities 2011 (Belfast), Wien Modern 2011 (Vienna) ISEA2012 (Istambul), Multiplicidades 2012 (Rio), ISMIR 2012 (Porto) Sounds New Festival (Canterbury), Admirável Musica Nova 2013 (Rio).
