Additional information

This paper stems from Cardiff’s involvement in the EU-leading, 20+ partner, €multi-million, EU-FP6 project ‘Alternative Fuels for Gas Turbines’ (AFTUR). This was the first programme undertaken at Cardiff’s Gas Turbine Research Centre (GTRC) – derived from QinetiQ’s former ‘Pyestock’ facilities. The work presents new data for turbulent burning rates of alternative fuels (biogas or hydrogen-doped methane) at high pressure/temperature in Cardiff’s new optical combustor. Results enabled critical appraisal of contemporary combustion models used for burner design. As a result of this work, Cardiff was a co-investigator on the leading subsequent EU-FP7 GT programme ‘H2-IGCC’. (Former QinetiQ Combustion Chief, kevin.brundish@cellaenergy.com).
