Additional information

Published as an invited paper in a special issue of Electrochimica Acta (Impact factor 3.83) following a well-received oral presentation at the 12th International Conference on Aluminium Alloys (ICAA-12) at Yokohama, Japan, September 2010, this work uses the scanning Kelvin probe to provide the first positive proof that the ‘near surface deformed layer’ (NSDL) on automotive AA6111 aluminium exhibits a potential >0.2 V lower than the bulk and that filiform corrosion associated with the NSDL arises from anodic activation wrt. intergranular attack. These findings are of significant economic importance and have led to funded collaboration with the Novelis aluminium company (john.hunter@novelis.com).
