Additional information

These newspaper columns are the result of my practice-based research teaching philosophy and English at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Wellingborough (1998-2012). The articles have been selected from those written between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2013 for their focus on issues of institutionalisation and education as a form of rehabilitation. Some have provoked public debate while others have been indirectly influential on the lives of individual prisoners. These twenty-five 600 word columns negotiated the demands of the Ministry of Justice, the Prison Security establishment and The Guardian editorial team in order to intellectually reflect on the challenges of prison life and communicate the importance of penal reform.
