The synaptic representation of sound source location in auditory cortex.
How animals process sounds is a poorly understood problem with implications for therapeutics (cochlea implantation) and voice recognition technologies. We developed a new conceptual framework explaining how cortical neurons process information about sound location. The techniques and findings in the paper formed the basis of two successful grants exploring central auditory processing, including a 5-year MRC Career Development award (G1000512, £1.4M), and led to lectures in Korean Institute of Science and Technology (2012) and Erasmus Medical Center, Netherlands (2013). Our method has subsequently been applied in a high profile Nature article (Chen et al., 2011).
