Additional information

The creation of Supernova was supported by a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship award. The piece was premiered at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, University of Oxford on 26 January 2013.

This 8-channel surround-sound composition investigates ways in which scientific research and data might be combined with musical composition to create new works. It uses the changing light spectra of Type 1a supernova explosions, converting these into sound using the phase vocoder data format, thus building on a considerable body of past research in this area by Wishart.

This submission comprises the piece itself (8-channel version and stereo mix) and an article by the composer which explains some of the research processes involved in the composition: ‘From Sound Morphing to the Synthesis of Starlight’, Musica/Tecnologia 7 (2013, available at www.fupress.net/index.php/mt/article/download/13207/12480‎).
