Additional information

Moving from spatially-lumped to distributed hydrological models significantly increases computational burden to calibrate and test models. Paper combines high-performance computing and state-of-the-art sensitivity analysis to evaluate behaviour of distributed model at grid scale for first time. Study shows how space-time dynamics of hydro-meteorological processes define value of hydrological observations. Co-author van Werkhoven, won best student presentation awards at 2006 and 2007 American Geophysical Union Fall Meetings [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-85]. Work feeds directly into transition by US National Weather Service towards spatially-distributed flood-forecasting models [contact: Hydrologist-in-Charge, North Central River Forecast Center] and paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5.
