<20>This paper sets out an agenda for the way HCI as a discipline should develop in order to strengthen its internal scientific rigour as well as external pragmatic value. The paper builds on ideas developed over several years in various keynotes, notably the SIGCHI Ireland inaugural lecture in Dublin in 2008. Of particular importance is the expression of the need for methodological thinking not simply importing of methods. The broader discipline-related arguments of the paper are exemplified by empirical work on single-user design.
