This paper develops a new method to model the dynamics of our future traffic systems, in which vehicles are equipped with intelligent devices that allow them to communicate with neighbouring vehicles and with the infrastructure. As well as contributing to the first author's successful EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship (EP/J002186/1), the paper stimulated a new collaboration with the second author from the Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands.
