“Revolutionierung der Augen” : Politische Massenmobilisierung in der Weimarer Republik und der Münzenberg-Konzern
This offers new insights into the visual strategies of political mobilization employed by the radical Left in the Weimar Republic. It explores the rise of Willi Münzenberg’s media empire in general and of the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) in particular. The AIZ became one of the most innovative and popular periodicals of the Weimar era. Focussing on the collaboration between Kurt Tucholsky and John Heartfield, the article examines, especially, the use of photography and montage in so-called ‘image-poems’ (Bild-Gedichte), which were part of a wider strategy to generate a ‘proletarian reality’ and to make readers see the world from a revolutionary perspective.
