Additional information

This is the first study (published in Russian and English) to analyse “New Russian Drama” (NRD), a wave of new playwrights and their work to have emerged in the late 1990s. The book places the movement into the context of the discourse of violence, pertinent to Soviet and Russian culture of the 20th century, in order to explain the disconnection between reality/stage action and language/text on the one hand, and the inability to express emotions or ideas through “normal” language on the other: instead, their abusive and vulgar phrases indicate the replacement of communication through verbal/physical violence.
