Additional information

The solar-powered cooling system reported, is significant in its potential to support food security by cooling horticultural greenhouses in hot coastal areas. The system uses seawater instead of freshwater and achieves low temperatures even under humid conditions. Prof. Nina Fedoroff of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, recognised this potential and invited Davies to participate in a multidisciplinary greenhouse design team (Nina.Fedoroff@KAUST.EDU.SA). The $20m project is managed by HOK of St. Louis (Valerie Greer, Vice President, valerie.greer@hok.com). Davies has visited KAUST 4 times to work with the team, which includes industrial and academic partners.
