Additional information

Provides first results relating crystallographic orientation and position within individual grains to the shape memory effect in an important industrial uranium alloy, which is a material that requires special handling. Although the material is monoclinic, it was completely characterized experimentally and deformation was established using transmission electron microscopy. Nanoindentation results in different grains were used to relate the prior deformation of each grain to the measured mechanical properties and predicted yield strength. This work has significant implications for the forming of uranium metal for special nuclear applications in the US and UK (Bob Field, Los Alamos National Laboratory rdfield@lanl.gov).
