Observations of the Scottish elections 2007
<07>Innovation: The first academic study undertaken of voting technologies and processes in Scotland for a General Election (and the serious problems encountered).
Rigour: The paper is based on observations by six observers at four count sites and local authority areas over the election, as well as observations of demonstrations of the counting system over the preceding two years. The data collected represented more than 300 hours of observations.
Impact: The insights in the paper and follow on work with the Electoral Commission led to the adoption of system wide socio-technical testing for the e-counting used system in 2012.[ http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/__data/assets/electoral_commission_pdf_file/0011/13223/Scottish-Election-Report-A-Final-For-Web.pdf]
