<06>Elsevier’s Computer Networks is one of the premier outlets in the field with a high impact factor. The paper presents the first hardware implementation of in-line performance measurement of the data-carrying network traffic as a native part of routers’ processing engines at very high speeds (10 Gb/s). The work consists of a real hardware implementation and evaluation of performance and overhead. The system has been rigorously evaluated using real traffic traces from Internet backbones, and it demonstrates that always-on instrumentation can be seamlessly implemented and exploited to facilitate measurement-based, adaptive resource provisioning.
