The research underpinning the content of this book was reviewed in the Annals of Tourism Research (2011) 38(4), 1666-67 and is essentially hermeneutical; i.e. it investigates ways of engaging with and interpreting textual data as there are very few other practical ways of accessing Classical Antiquity. This was developed with archival and ethnographic fieldwork from Europe and the Middle East to Central Asia. The reviewer argued that the text was "beautifully researched, and makes a contribution as being the first book that examines the origins of hospitality and tourism..."
