Additional information

As part of our effort at the University of Sunderland to enhance safety and reduce fatalities, new S-shaped longitudinal members are developed and tested. This paper presents extensive finite element simulations of the crash behaviour and the energy absorption characteristics to investigate the design of optimized members. The results are used as tools while carrying out the validation and experimental work. Detailed work of designing these new members using new lightweight materials are now being carried out as a new collaboration with Jilin University in China.
