This paper was developed from research into a number of companies involve in food and drink production and packing, in particular companies who are using large amounts of energy. The project was funded by the department for environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA). AMAP were invited to join the project because of their expertise in manufacturing techniques and technologies. The project had four main research partners and 6 national companies including Sainsbury and Arla Foods. The project was successful in that it identified a number of underlying problems in food and drink production. The Value Stream Mapping exercise undertaken by AMAP proved that certain production processes were high users of energy. This allowed maintenance specialists in AMAP to introduce a number of techniques to reduce energy consumption.
