Significance of output:

This paper addresses the lack of research on children’s thermal comfort in schools and shows that standards based on adults are not appropriate for children. The paper’s methods and findings are being incorporated into a book on Adaptive Thermal Comfort to be published in 2014 by the leading authorities in this field (Humphreys, Nicol, and Roaf, 2014). A BRI editorial (F. Nicol and F. Stevenson) commenting on this work states that 'clearly, this is important information for the design of schools'. This study could provide a basis for the development of child-specific environmental criteria and design standards for school buildings.
