Significance of output:

The Editor-in-Chief of Biomaterials described this work as “ground-breaking”. He nominated the article to appear as a Leading Opinion Paper, something he only “occasionally recommends”. The methods in this paper were adopted by the biomedical device company Arterius Ltd for the design of their biodegradable polymer stent. Dr Kadem Al-Lamee (kadem.allamee@arterius.co.uk), MD of Arterius Ltd, recently acknowledged that “the approach used in (this) paper has led to a family of novel designs” which are undergoing patent protection. The company has invested approximately £15K in a UK Patent Application (PN796367GB) and an International (PCT) Patent Application (PN796367WO).
