Significance of output:

This work originated from the Rolls-Royce project IPAS (Integrated Products And Services). Rolls-Royce need to better predict lives of their components within aircraft engines to prevent accidents. A cautious approach, whilst being safer, is very expensive. Within the IPAS project Southampton produced a library of accurate life prediction models that saves Rolls-Royce significant expenditure over the life of the engine (Dave Knott, Chief of R&T, Design Systems Engineering, david.knott@rolls-royce.com). This paper reports on techniques used to better model stresses in bonded joints. This is of importance to Rolls-Royce as they move from metallic to composite fan blades, for example.
