Muscle microvascular dysfunction in central obesity is related to muscle insulin insensitivity but Is not reversed by high-dose statin treatment
Significance of output:
The relationship between microvascular dysfunction in obesity and insulin sensitivity is important as obesity is the most significant modifiable risk factor in the development of Type 2 diabetes which is now considered an epidemic by the WHO. Statins are cheap and effective in treating vascular risk and have been considered a therapeutic target for microvascular dysfunction. Using engineering techniques to evaluate influence of potential confounders (physical activity, fitness) and endothelial state (plethysmography, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp) we evaluated the effect of prolonged high-dose statin treatment as a potential low cost therapy and showed it to be ineffective in this regard.
